Before I started really diving into my personal development, I thought vision boards were kind of a waste of time. We only have a set amount of hours in a day so spending time making a self love vision board seems like a waste when I could be journaling or reading a personal development book.
But friends, I couldn’t be more wrong.
Creating a self love vision board is an incredibly powerful way to manifest your dream life. Not only do you get the satisfaction of seeing your ideal life through images, but you also get to spend time focusing on your wants and needs – which is a crucial part of finding your true self and what you really want out of life.
Then you can start incorporating this vision into your daily routine and add a little romance into your life by truly being present in the moment and enjoying the small moments in your day-to-day.
Once you create your vision board, what you actually want is out there, in the universe.
After it’s created, you should put it somewhere you will see it often as a reminder of where you want to go.
It’s a way to call your own shots and it helps get your creative juices flowing. Pinterest will be your friend during this exercise.
If you don’t know where to start, then you’ve come to the right place! I’m going to go over all things vision boards so you can start vision boarding today and create your dream board.
What is a Vision Board?
A vision board is a visual representation of your goals. It can be anything from a poster board to a Pinterest board. The whole point is that you put anything and everything on it that represents what you want in life – whether it’s a new job, more money, better health, or a loving relationship.
Vision boards are popular because they work. The Law of Attraction states that like attracts like, so the more you focus on what you want, the more likely you are to get it.
While I think everyone should have a self love vision board because self-love is so incredibly important, it is also great to have all different types of vision boards. For me personally, I have a personal vision board, a business vision board, and a self-love vision board! All of these inspiration boards help me envision the bigger picture and what I need to do to live my dream life.
Why do vision boards work?
The more positivity you bring into your life, the more optimistic you’ll become. A vision board is a tool to bring this positivity into your life because it forces you to visualize your hopes and dreams.
When you create a vision board, you’re putting all of your wants and desires out there into the universe. And when you do that consistently, the law of attraction takes over and starts to bring those things to you.
Effective vision boards should be something you can look at every day and they should inspire you to take action. So, if there are any goals on your vision board that you’re not taking action towards, then it’s time to re-evaluate your goals. Maybe your ‘why’ isn’t strong enough.
Visualization goes hand in hand with vision boards and there have been numerous studies about how visualization can prep the mind to do great things. Check out this article from psychology today about the power of visualization.
Vision boards work if you believe they can. I know that sounds cheesy but it’s all about mindset here. Anyone can spend an hour making a collage of nice pictures but you have to believe that you can accomplish the things on your board.
Getting Started with your self love vision board
Now that we’ve talked about vision boards in a broad sense, let’s focus our attention back on vision boards for self-love.
Before you start creating your vision board, you have to get in the right mindset. Nothing is off-limits for your vision board. The sky is the limit! So, don’t be afraid to dream big!
Self-love is about accepting yourself for who you are, and that includes your flaws. When you’re able to accept yourself for who you are, you’re one step closer to manifesting your dream life.
What would your life look like if you loved yourself unconditionally? What self-care activities would you partake in? Who would you spend your time with?
These are all questions you can ask yourself so you can really visualize your dream life.
Vision Board Basics
Before you start creating your vision board, there are a few things you need to know.
1. What are your goals?
The first step is to figure out what you want. What are your goals? What do you want to manifest in your life? Don’t be afraid to dream big! Get as specific as possible and try to include things you may have never thought of before. Having a list of goals is one of the best ways to know what kind of person you want to become and what areas of your life you want to improve on.
2. What do you want your vision board to look like?
This is completely up to you! Some people prefer to create a physical poster board, while others opt for a digital vision board. It doesn’t matter what format you choose, as long as it represents your goals and inspires you.
3. What goes on a vision board?
Again, this is up to you! But some common things that are found on vision boards are pictures of what you want, quotes that inspire you, positive affirmations, and symbols that represent your goals.
It could even be a collage of words. It is whatever your heart’s true desire is! It’s up to you how you want it to be represented.
4. How often should you look at your vision board?
The more often, the better! If you can look at it on a daily basis, this will really help you visualize your dream life every day. After all, a vision board is only going to be effective if you are able to consistently see it.
Types of Vision Boards
There are 3 basic types of vision boards.
1. Physical Vision Board
If you want to go old school, grab a poster board and some magazines and get to work! This is the most traditional type of vision board and it’s great for those who want to get their hands dirty.
- Poster board or a cork board
- Magazine clippings
2. Digital Vision Board
If you’re more of a graphic designer, or you want to be able to share your vision board with others, a digital vision board is the way to go! You can create one on your computer or phone by using websites like Pinterest or Canva.
I would suggest using Pinterest for inspiration and Canva to actually put your self-love vision board together.
One of the easiest ways to ensure you’re seeing your self love vision board every day is to make it your background on your phone or laptop. A digital vision board is the best portable vision board out there especially if you make it your phone background because let’s be real, your phone is always with you.
- Computer or phone
- Internet connection
- Something to save your board to (folder, good ole paint, word doc, etc.)
- Optional but recommended (both are free!): Pinterest or Canva account
3. Pinterest Vision Board
If you don’t want to bother making a collage or trying to combine a bunch of pictures together, you could also create a board with self-love-inspired pins! The only downside is that you have to make more of an effort to see it every day.
Unlike the other options, you can’t save it as your background or hang it up on your wall so it takes a little more work to look at it daily.
However, you could spend a dedicated amount of time scrolling through Pinterest and adding to your board so your vision board can be constantly evolving.
- Pinterest account!
The key to a successful self love vision board is creating one that you can look at on a daily basis. This might mean printing off your favorite quotes, photos of what makes you feel good and goals for the future, or even just making it your background on your phone.
