Having self-confidence is so important for your mental health. If you don’t believe in yourself, it is going to be hard to live the life of your dreams. But sometimes it is hard to know where to start on your journey to increase your confidence level.

Trust me, I know.

Growing up, the mean girls in middle school killed my spirit and confidence. Am I being dramatic? Maybe, but I was afraid to show my uniqueness until my twenties. I had such low self-esteem I was the quiet girl who sat in the corner. Honestly, I didn’t even know who I was or what I liked. I wish I could hug my younger self and tell her it is going to be okay.

Because it does get better with a little work and faith.

Journaling is the process of writing down your thoughts and feelings. It can be done in many different ways including brainstorming, brain dumping, and writing out ideas. There is no right or wrong way to journal as long as you’re being open and vulnerable with yourself.

You are giving yourself a safe space to explore your feelings and emotions. It’s a small thing to do to get out of your comfort zone and truly grow as an individual.

When you start journaling, you’ll be surprised how much you can truly uncover and what you’ve been repressing for years. As someone who is more introverted, the benefit of journaling is that I can be as open and honest as possible and I don’t have to find the words.

Journaling should be something that you enjoy, so make sure that you set aside time for it. I suggest choosing an amount of time that works for your schedule and dedicating the time to write your thoughts out. This can be as little as 5 minutes. Consistency is key here.

Find a quiet place to write

Find a place where you can relax and focus on your thoughts. If you’re struggling to find the right environment, try using a noise machine or listening to music that relaxes you.

It’s critical to find a space that isn’t going to be distracting. If that means putting your phone in the other room, do that. It is important to focus on the present moment when working through these prompts.

Keep in mind that these prompts are starting points. Try to expand each prompt until you have nothing else to say. It’s important to keep pushing yourself to truly uncover what needs to be found.

Tips for building confidence

The last thing I want to leave you with is some tips to build confidence and high self-esteem. Personal development is a never-ending journey. The good news is that it does get easier the more you push yourself out of your comfort zone and recognize all the amazing things you have to offer.

Here are some tips that really helped me gain more confidence:

  • Make a list of your accomplishments. Write down everything that you have done that makes you proud. Don’t shy away from including small accomplishments. Even little wins are wins that should be celebrated!
  • Give yourself permission to be imperfect. We all make mistakes, and that’s okay. Accepting your mistakes and learning from them is a sign of strength, not weakness.
  • Don’t compare yourself to others. Comparison is the thief of joy after all. Instead, focus on your own journey.
  • Take time for self care. Make sure that you are taking care of yourself both mentally and physically. This includes getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and exercising. You know all the feel-good activities.
  • Don’t fixate on your flaws. We all have things we don’t like about ourselves, but instead of focusing on them, focus on the things that you love.
  • The power of positive affirmations. One of the easiest and most effective ways to build confidence is by incorporating daily affirmations into your routine. After all, confidence comes from within so if you talk to yourself kindly, you’ll see a huge mental shift.
