Between the pandemic and being on a budget, at home date nights are sometimes just better. You should never stop dating and that is sometimes forgotten in long-term relationships. My boyfriend and I work different hours so sometimes it’s hard to find time to actually go out and we honestly just want a night in. We’re always looking for new home date night ideas to switch it up.
However, while a movie night has its place and is a great way to wind down, it’s not my favorite date night. It’s not the greatest date to build a deeper bond with your partner which is what I prefer. We live together so we spend a lot of time on our phones not connecting so I’m always looking for ways to do an at-home date night that has us not looking at a screen.
Here are 23 date night ideas that are bound to get you and your significant other talking and maybe even learning something new about each other.
When you want food…
1. Cook Together
You have to eat so why not make it into a fun activity! This is way cheaper than going out to eat and can be a lot of fun creating your own cuisines! Some ideas are pizza, homemade pasta, donuts, and of course desserts. I’m a casserole girl to the bone so it would be great to find recipes to cook with my boyfriend. He’s the chef in our household but I’ve definitely been trying to become a better cook. I could definitely expand my recipe list.
2. Have a romantic candlelight dinner
Who says you have to go out to get dressed up and have a nice meal? Put on your best dress and have a nice dinner at home. It’s fun to get dressed up and look nice and definitely helps get you out of the usual routine. It’s also cheaper and then you don’t have to worry about a designated driver. Crack open a nice bottle of wine, cook or order some takeout, grab a candle and you’re all set for some great conversation with a great ambiance.
3. Fancy fast food night
Feel like dressing up but don’t want to pay for an expensive takeout meal that isn’t going to be as great as if you went to the restaurant? Unfortunately, steak is just not the same when it’s been sitting for a little bit. However, there are plenty of options that are very tasty as takeout. What’s stopping you from getting dressed up and ordering from your favorite fast food joint? That’s right, no one. Just another excuse to get dressed up for your special someone and yourself.
4. Travel inspired dinner at home
Another cooking idea is to have a theme night! Pick a country and plan a whole meal around their cuisine. If you love to travel, this is a great way to learn about another culture. You could even take it a step farther and plan your whole night around this culture. You could cook and order some food from a local place that serves this cuisine. Here are some ideas if you need inspiration
- Mexican – Chips and Guacamole and Queso, Tacos, Churros
- Italian – Bread, Homemade pasta, tiramisu
- Mediterranean – Pita bread and Hummus, Kabobs, Green Salad
You could do this inside or outside. Picnics are such a classic date idea and people just don’t do it anymore. It’s casual, fun, and a great way to create memories with your S.O. Let’s bring this classic date back. Prepare a little meal, grab a basket, some wine (or your favorite beverage), and a blanket and you’re all set.
6. Create a signature cocktail
Get a little creative and test out different cocktails until you’ve found the perfect signature cocktail for the two of you. Buy some mixers and a bunch of miniatures of your favorite liquor and have fun with it! Be adventurous in what you mix in there. If you think about it vodka and orange juice doesn’t sound like a good combo, but it is! May you can discover the next popular drink. Hopefully, it doesn’t take you too long to create this cocktail or anything may taste amazing.
7. Tasting party — wine, beer, mini spirits, etc
Wine and beer tasting are so much fun! This is something that is so easy to recreate at home. Grab some cheese and chocolate for wine tasting. For beer tasting, grab some finger foods and you’re good to go! You could get some mini wine bottles or a bottle or two, and for beer, pick up a variety pack. You could even grab miniatures and have a little tasting of liquors. Whatever floats your boat.
8. Online cooking class together
There’s so much you can do around food. If neither of you is good at cooking, why not learn together by enrolling in an online cooking class! Cooking is such an important skill to have since you’re always going to have to eat so there’s no better moment than now to learn. This would be a fun and tasty way to expand your cooking knowledge.
9. Fondue night
Need I say more? Melted cheese and chocolate is so tasty. Have your own Melting Pot experience and grab your favorite slices of bread, cheese, chocolate, and fruits. Plan the menu, prep the ingredients and you have a night of fun in front of you. It would be way more budget-friendly than going out for fondue. The only downside (if you don’t have one like me) is that having a fondue set would make this much easier. But hey, good investment, right?
When you want to do something ….
10. Play Video Games Together
Some friendly competition doesn’t hurt anyone, right? My boyfriend and I have played Mario Kart for hours and it’s such a fun way to be engaged in something together while looking at a screen. This is the only exception to the no-screen rule if you ask me. Time flies and there are so many options nowadays for anyone to enjoy. You can even get a little active with Dance Dance Revolution or Wii Sports as examples.
11. Game Night
In addition to video games, the classic game night is another fun way to engage with your partner and put the phones down, amiright? If you aren’t a fan of traditional board games, there are so many other options such as trivia night, puzzles, indoor mini-golf, solve a murder, or card games. One of these is bound to interest the two of you. There are even subscription boxes nowadays that take the planning out of the equation. The options here are also endless.
12. Friendly Battle
Another fun idea is to act like a kid again. Remember nerf guns? Buy some and have a nerf gun battle with your other half. You could surprise them with the nerf gun and a note, and then you hide somewhere in your house. You get the element of surprise here which I know I’d need. If Nerf guns aren’t up your alley or seem like an unnecessary cost, you could battle with marshmallows or pillows.
13. Break a world record
Look up the Guinness book of world records and find one you think you could beat! On the bachelorette, they broke the longest kiss in an ice-cold bath record. Oddly specific but it makes for so many options of records to beat. There’s literally a world record for everything. Here’s the world record website so have a look.
14. Workout together
A couple that workouts together stays together is the saying, right? Challenge each other to see who can do the most push-ups or burpees. Working out together doesn’t have to be just this intense though, you could always go for a hike or bike ride and enjoy nature and each other’s company.
15. Virtual trip to a museum
Google Culture and Arts teamed up with the majority of the famous museums around the world so you could enjoy the exhibits from the comfort of your home! This is a great way for you and your partner to spend some time browsing some of the world’s greatest exhibits from the comfort of your home. It’s also a good way to see if this museum would be worth browsing next time you’re in the area.
When you want to relax but also have quality time …
16. Living room campout
Remember how fun it was to build a fort as a kid? Why not do that as an adult and make a campout with all the fixings. To build a fort, get creative by using the furniture, blankets, and sheets or you can always use a tent. Make some camp food such as hamburgers, hot dogs, foil dinners, and definitely make s’mores in the oven. Get some cozy blankets, pillows, build your fort or use a tent if you have it, make your favorite snacks and you’re good to go.
17. Turn your bedroom into a fancy hotel room
If you don’t want to actually go stay in a fancy hotel right now, why not create your own? This is also budget-friendly if you’re trying to save some cash. Get some travel-size toiletries, a bottle of champagne, and enjoy a night “away”. Order some room service (also known as takeout). If you use your imagination, there are ways to recreate your favorite fancy hotel.
18. Home Spa Date
Everyone loves to get pampered and this is an easy way to make your significant other feel spoiled. Home spa items such as candles, moisturizers, face masks, lotions, and bath bombs seem to be a very popular gift so you may even have these items lying around your home. It’s a great way to get rid of these things in a fun way. To step it up a notch, you could get some massage oils and give your S.O. a nice massage. This is a great date when you’ve both had a stressful week and just want to relax and spend some quality time together.
When you want to be productive …
19. Play interior designer and redesign a room in your home
If you’ve been meaning to redesign a room, why not make it into a date night? This is a great way to check something off your to-do list and spend some quality time together. Get the supplies beforehand so you can focus on setting up your newly decorated room.
20. Plan your dream trip or budget-friendly trip
Even if you can’t travel right now, there’s no reason why you can’t plan your next trip! Better yet, plan your dream trip and then when the time is right, you already know where you’re going and what you’re doing! My boyfriend and I want to visit Iceland in 2022 to see the northern lights so this would be a great date for us so we’ll be ready to go. I love planning trips so I could do this all day long.
