What are the benefits of goal setting and what’s the point of setting goals?
There’s no doubt about it that setting goals are important, especially if you want to live your best life.
After all, if you don’t set goals, how do you expect your life to change?
However, there is a difference between setting goals and actually achieving them. That’s a little harder. I get that.
I know I’ve set many goals in the past that I didn’t reach but you know what? There was still a benefit to setting them.
There are also different strategies out there that you can use as the first step towards actually accomplishing your goals.
The power of goal setting is pretty incredible. It helps you get the life you’re dreaming about and live life on your own terms. Whether that’s in the business world or as a content creator, setting goals is a powerful way of saying what you want and going for it.
So What’s the Point?
As long as you work towards these goals, you are one step closer to living a fulfilling life. Your dream life.
Failed goals can be a learning opportunity. Sometimes we aren’t meant to accomplish goals and we need to pivot. Or we need to evaluate and change our strategy.
And that’s okay. It’s part of being human. There are always going to be setbacks and bumps in the road.
So while life doesn’t always work out the way we plan and we don’t always hit every goal we set, there are still many benefits to setting goals.
The importance of setting goals is to create accountability and a clear path to greater success. It makes you call your own shot and decide what you want in life.
10 Benefits of Goal Setting
Now onto the good stuff, the benefits of setting goals. Before we dive in, I want to do a short but quick introduction to this.
First of all, it’s important to set realistic goals. If your goal is to lose 30 pounds in one month, that is most likely not going to happen. These benefits are not going to apply to you. #realtalk.
However, if you set goals that are going to stretch you a bit BUT are possible to reach with a little hard work and grit, you’ll reap these benefits.
A good way to set realistic, manageable goals is to use the SMART goal method. Smart goals are my personal favorite way to reach any goal, whether it’s personal goals or professional goals. If you want to dive deeper into that, check out this article.
If not, let’s look at the benefits without further ado.
1. Provides a Clear Direction
I’m going to be blunt here, if you don’t set goals, it’s going to be really hard to live the life you want to live. It would be like trying to go to a new destination without a map. Sounds silly right? Well, that’s what life is like if you aren’t setting any goals.
You need to know where you’re going in order to get to that dream life of yours.
Without setting goals, you’ll be aimlessly wandering around not really knowing what you want or how to get it. But if you set clear goals, it helps get you heading in the right direction in less time. It’s like having a map that tells you exactly where you need to go.
2. Gives Yourself a List of Expectations
Part of having goals is knowing what you should expect from yourself. These expectations keep you accountable and push you to do your best.
Especially if you break your long-term goals into short-term goals, you know what you need to do to move the needle forward.
Your goals can be like having a personal coach that is always there pushing you to be better. And we could all use a little push sometimes, right?
But these expectations are not meant to be unrealistic or unattainable. They should be based on your current situation and what you are capable of achieving. Make sure you are making measurable goals so you can track your progress.
3. Provides a Sense of Personal Satisfaction
Have you ever felt that sense of satisfaction after completing a project or reaching a goal? It feels amazing, doesn’t it?
When you set and accomplish goals, it gives you a sense of personal satisfaction. You did something that you said you were going to do. And not only that, but you put in the hard work and dedication to make it happen.
One of the main benefits of goal setting is the boost you get in your mental health. It’s a real confidence boost when you are able to accomplish that challenging goal.
To know that you can do amazing things and you can do anything you put your mind to!
It’s a great way to give yourself a pat on the back and say “job well done.”
4. Gives you a Sense of Purpose
One of my favorite benefits of goal setting is that it gives you a sense of purpose. If you’re someone who feels like they’re just going through the motions, goal setting can help you find your purpose.
In fact, many people have found that when they don’t set goals, they end up feeling lost or unfulfilled. But when they start setting goals, they feel more connected to their life and their future.
As human beings, we are wired to want to be better, to do better. To be the alpha per se. In other words, if you don’t set goals, you’re going to become stagnant and your brain is going to crave more.
You’re always going to want to get to that next level. Goals are the way to do this.
When you start reaching those hard goals, then new opportunities start to arise and you can level up more than you could ever imagine!
5. Helps you Stay Focused
Another great benefit of setting goals is that it helps you stay focused. If you don’t have a clear direction, how can you expect to stay on the right path?
If your goal is making money and you’re working towards that goal, you will naturally focus on tasks that are going to make you more money rather than things that aren’t going to help you reach your goal.
But if you don’t have a goal, you can easily get sidetracked and end up working on things that are a waste of time.
It is important to note that it should be meaningful goals. Discovering your ‘why’ behind your goals can help you to stay focused when it starts to get tough. Which is definitely going to happen so buckle up.
The main benefit of identifying your why is so you can stay motivated and focused when you start to feel discouraged.
6. Keeps you motivated
When you set goals, it gives you something to strive for. Something to work towards. And when you accomplish your goals, it provides a sense of accomplishment and motivation to keep going.
It’s like a never-ending cycle of motivation. The more you accomplish, the more motivated you become. And the more motivated you become, the more likely you are to accomplish your goals.
Once you figure out what works for you when it comes to achieving goals then you’ll become a beast at hitting your goals and becoming the best version of yourself.
7. Prevents Overwhelm
Have you ever felt overwhelmed because you didn’t know what to do next? Staring at a blank screen or an empty piece of paper is not the best way to get started, right?
But when you set and accomplish goals, it can prevent some of that overwhelm. It gives you something to work towards so you aren’t just sitting around wondering “what now?”
The first step is to set effective goals to reap the benefits. This means breaking goals into smaller steps, or short-term goals. Small steps will make it seem much more attainable.
One of my favorite examples of this is when I was training for a half marathon.
If I thought about the 13.1 miles at the start of the race, I would have never made it. It would have been too overwhelming. However, if you just take it mile by mile or landmark by landmark, it seems much easier to get to the finish line.
One method is to try creating an action plan for your goals. How are you going to break down this big goal into something that you can digest?
Once you have a set of goals that lead you to your bigger goal then you know the action you need to take to reach that big crazy dream.
8. Helps you Make Better Decisions
This goes hand in hand with preventing overwhelm. Goal setting helps you make better decisions because you have that clear path forward. Especially if you create that action plan!
If you’re trying to accomplish a specific goal, you will be more likely to make decisions that are going to help you reach that goal rather than decisions that are just going to create more work for you.
This is because your goals change the way that you approach a problem or dilemma. Before, you might have been stuck between two options, but once you set a goal, it helps you decide which option is going to lead you closer to your goal.
9. Better Productivity
When you set goals, it also leads to better productivity. This is because you’re more likely to focus on tasks that are going to help you accomplish your goal rather than wasting time on things that aren’t going to get you closer to where you want to be.
Productivity and time management goes hand in hand so if you know what you need to do to be productive then you can use your personal favorite time management technique to accomplish those goals.
Finding the right techniques for you makes all the difference! I love the Pomodoro technique!
And not only will you be more productive, but you’ll also be happier and feel more accomplished.
10. Getting Closer to your Dream Life
And finally, a benefit of goal setting is that it gets you closer to living your dream life. Your best life.
When you set specific and actionable goals, it gives you something tangible to work towards. A greater chance at living the life of your dreams.
And when you start accomplishing those goals, you’ll be one step closer to achieving your dreams and a better future.
Take a moment to create a vision board or to write a letter from your future self. What do you want your life to look like in 5 years? 10 years? How about 20 years from now?
Once you can uncover that future life of yours than think of benchmarks you need to hit to get there. Is there a certain income goal you need to hit? Any experiences you need to experience? Who is there with you? This will make it much easier to create goals that align with this vision.
So if you’re ready to start living your dream life, start setting some goals!
Goal setting is one of the most important things you can do for yourself if you want to achieve your dreams. There are many benefits associated with goal setting both physically and mentally. Once you start achieving your goals, you will feel more confident and ready to take on anything that comes your way.
