When choosing how you want your house or apartment to look, it can be a little overwhelming. I know it is definitely for me. Home decor is just like fashion; trends come and go. You are constantly seeing different styles and decorating ideas. Navigating through all this can be a little tricky. I know as I get older, the posters or wall collage of pictures is just not cutting it anymore. I want a classic interior decor style for my home. Something that is timeless.

I’ve been dreaming about creating a classic interior decor look and feel for my apartment (and house in the future). I want my apartment to look more mature, ya know?

Redecorating can be expensive so like me, you may be trying to come up with a look that is classic and will never go out of style. I’m a strong believer in investing in some timeless pieces that you’ll have for a long time. Of course, you can buy some fun, inexpensive items that are easy to change up when you get bored of the current look of the room but nothing beats a good quality, comfortable sofa. My first big purchase was a nice dining room table since I know we are always going to need that.

I’ve been researching ideas for my apartment especially since I don’t love how it currently looks. I’m so excited to add some classic pieces to my apartment that I can easily move to a house when I make that move. Hopefully, in the near future, friends but houses are expensive! In the meantime, I’ve come up with some tips on how to make a small room appear larger in this article.

I’ve come up with 7 decorating tips that you can incorporate in your home decor so that it looks timeless for years to come.

1. Neutral Hues

Neutral Hues are a great classic interior design style

Having some of your main focal points, such as the sofa or the walls a neutral color gives you the opportunity to do so much with your space. You can easily change up a room with accessories such as throw pillows, blankets, or different artwork or wall decor. Heck, you could switch these things up every season or for each holiday and it wouldn’t be that time consuming or costly.

If you chose to paint your walls a bold color, this may be a little harder to accomplish especially if you find a bold decoration that you’re loving in this season in your life but probably not in five years. There is also the option to add pops of color by adding an accent chair, decorations, or an area rug to name a few.

I love decorating according to the holidays or seasons. I have an ottoman that I switch up the throw pillow on top of it according to the season. It’s an easy way for me, especially in an apartment, to make the room feel more festive and fresh. It also doesn’t involve much need for storage since that is hard to come by in an apartment!  It also takes me seconds to switch the pillow.

Being in an apartment, my walls are naturally a neutral color so I’m going to add some pops of colors to my decor to brighten it up and add some coziness to the room. My at-home office set-up that I recently designed actually has a good amount of color which I love. I incorporated my favorite color — blue!

2. Artwork

artwork is a great classic interior home decor style

What is so great about artwork is that it can be classic and truly unique. Gallery walls, for example, are a classic design tactic, and the opportunities there are endless. It is basically the grown-up version of the picture collage that you taped on your college dorm walls. You remember those, right?

The more mature look for this is to create a gallery wall with your favorite pictures. The best part is that you can also incorporate different wall pieces into a gallery wall so it doesn’t have to be just your own personal pictures. It is also easy to change up the pictures when you create new memories you want to display!

If you actually invest in some quality artwork, this could easily be on your walls for your entire life. I personally have two pieces that were at my grandparent’s house before they moved to a smaller home. Not only are these great pieces of art, but they are also extra special to me because it reminds me of my grandparents’ house and all the times I spent there.

Arts adds personality and warmth to the room. One of my friends actually made a gallery wall out of just artwork she collected in her then small apartment and it looked fantastic! Now that she has a house and more walls, she has them displayed throughout her house and it looks great like this as well.

Just imagine what your house would look like if you had no artwork or pictures hanging on your wall? Pretty boring, right? I love seeing all my friend’s different styles especially as we get older and my friends and I are putting more thought into our interior decor styles.

3. Area Rugs

area rugs are a great example of a classic interior design decor style

An area rug can completely change the feel of the room. If you can’t decide on just one area rug you love, layering rugs are very popular and timeless. Rugs add warmth and comfort to the room. It’s an easy way to add some texture to the room and some color if you go the neutral approach with your furniture and walls. Just make sure the rug is properly size and well placed.

There are so many different kinds of rugs, you can show off your personality here too. Rugs are made out of so many different materials and designs, there’s one that is bound to catch your attention. If you want a rug that will last for years, I wouldn’t recommend a shag rug or one with long hair in a high trafficked area as it will get matted down and look old. There are places where shag rugs work well. For example, we have a shag rug in front of our coffee table but we aren’t walking in front of the table too often so that helps it still look fresh.

I think area rugs are a must if you have hardwood floors. They help reduce sound and add some coziness to the room. Rugs are softer on your feet and bring extra comfort to the room since then you can relax on the floor if you’re playing games or have a larger gathering.

4. Built-in Shelves

built-in shelves are a great classic interior home decor style

An added bonus to this classic look is that it adds value to your home! Built-in shelves are appealing and functional, which is great in any home. Having open shelves gives you the opportunity to add your personality to a room without having to put another hole in your wall. You can display artwork, pictures, family heirlooms, souvenirs you’ve brought back from your travels — the list goes on and on. It is also a great place to store things, you can add bins so it doesn’t look too cluttered.

I try to bring back one souvenir from everywhere I visit so built-in shelves would be perfect to display these. I’ve also been trying to read more so these shelves could also be a place to store the books I collect. If you’re a bookworm, this is where you could have your home library with all your favorite books to cozy up with! I will definitely be building some built-in shelves in my future home. Unfortunately, this tip doesn’t really work for us apartment goers but a bookshelf is also not a bad investment as a workaround.

5. “Real Material”

plants are a great way to add a classic look to your interior decor style. After all, plants have been around for forever

When I say real materials, I’m referring to anything that could last 100s of years.

This includes wood, ceramic tile, marble, linen, copper, brass, leather, or slate. Not only are these materials high quality that will last a long time, but they are also a timeless look that can be incorporated into any style.

Design experts suggest using aged brass, silver, or copper when incorporating these metals into your home. These can also be pieces that can be handed down for generations; maybe your family already has some that you could add to your home!

My grandmother actually just gave me some of her tea sets which are so cute and silverware that is from Norway! These are items I will always cherish because they came from her and I know they will last my lifetime. They really don’t make things like they used to which is such a shame.

My boyfriend has a clock from his grandmother that we would love to incorporate into our future home. These items bring history into your home that cannot be replicated. It is neat when you have something in your house with a story behind it; makes your home that much more unique.

I could go on and on with examples of family pieces that have been handed down. I feel like when my parents, grandparents, and so on declutter their houses, they try to pass things down to us. My sister got the coveted elephant table from my grandparent’s house and it always puts a smile on my face when I go to her house and see it. It’s my favorite thing in her house because of all the memories.

On top of these materials, it will also always be in style to incorporate nature into our homes.

There are so many options of plants and flowers and you get the added benefit of getting some extra fresh air into your home. There are also a ton of options when it comes to pots. You can do a lot here. Plants are never going to go out of style.

I’m trying to incorporate some plants into my apartment which is difficult since I currently do not have a green thumb but I have been enjoying learning. It is also nice to have plants around the place. Right now, I’m focusing on low maintenance plants like the spider plant.

If you don’t have a green thumb, there are also fake plants and flowers to give your home this timeless look.  I’ve always been a fan of fake plants since then you don’t have to worry about watering it or the lighting. Lighting can be hard especially in an apartment or at least that is what I’m telling myself when one of my plants dies. RIP the African violet that I just had to let go of …  So my fellow plant killers, Dollar Tree has a great selection of fake flowers. You can create your own bouquet that won’t die.

When it comes down to it, you should design your home in a way that’s going to make you happy.

If looking at hot pink walls all the time is going to make you smile, then by all means go for it! I know I don’t want to have this perfect classic looking home if it’s not somewhere that makes me feel happy and glad to be there. Make your home feel like a warm hug.

the interior design of your home should be a reflection of you but classic interior design styles are a great way to make your decor last through the ages.

The most important part of decorating is to ensure you have a sense of balance and peace in the room. You want to create a home that is relaxing for you. You spend a lot of time at home so you might as well decorate it in a way that makes you happy. I’m sure you want to add some touches that makes your home feel cozy to you that isn’t a classic look. This could be different for everyone but for me, I love blankets. Even in the summer, I like to have blankets around the house.

Let me know if you have any of these classic interior decor styles in your home. A good comfy couch, a table to put your drink down on, lighting to make the room feel bright .. these are all more important than making sure you have the most classic, functional home.
